The Dominican Republic for Retirees... by... Dave Duncan |
In 2008, I retired... at the age of 62 to come to Luperon, Dominican Republic. I was lucky to get in touch with Gil McWhirter, who is distantly related to my wife. We began talking via email and I felt that I had "real" knowledge of the island and life there through Gil. We arranged a temporary rental for our arrival. It was a tiny "casita" of only about 700 or 800 square feet, one bedroom and a great room. We bought some furniture and survival type living needs while we waited for our 3500 pounds of personal items to arrive via the ocean freighter from Southern California. That means through the Panama Canal. It took two months for our belongings to arrive. Shortly after they arrived, we relocated to a larger casita in another part of Luperon in a more rural area, but still within walking distance to town.
I only had Social Security... as an income, but that retirement income put me in a position to be very financially comfortable. With the exchange rate, I did well in stretching my retirement money. We were able to adapt to a lot of the local culture and lifestyle. However, there were still "Gringo" lifestyle things that we were able to acquire with monthly trips to Santiago or Puerto Plata with a Dominican driver arranged for us through Gil. It is very important that you have a mentor to help you get into the flow of things. Having a bi-lingual friend to set up things like water and electricity service is a real boon. Internet, propane for cooking, furnishings are just a few of the things that can be difficult as you are in a Spanish-speaking environment and a different culture.
We met many wonderful people... and enjoyed our life with locals as well as expatriates from Canada, the US and Europe. We also enjoyed meeting the boaters that pass through or have ended up anchoring and have been in Luperon for years. My wife and I bought a pasola. That is a small Vespa type scooter and we zipped all around. We rode to La Isabella where Columbus landed and started a settlement. We even stood in the ruins of his house. We ate fish brought in the back door of a seaside restaurant and cooked very fresh. I bought lobster from a local fisherman for $3.00 for three large ones.
Life is different... You buy groceries fresh at local markets. The vegetable truck comes on Tuesday mornings from a farm area just 100 miles away and you get fresh produce that was picked yesterday. The Chicken man sells you fresh dressed chickens off his truck which comes past two or three times a week. You can also buy vegetables, fruit, and meat at little shops down town. You will not believe how good the fruit and vegetables are when they are fresh and not genetically altered so they ripen in Wal-Mart warehouses and look pretty but have no taste when you buy them at Wal-Mart or grocery store chains.
I arrived in Luperon... weighing 252 pounds. A year later I weighed only 207. I also was able to get off my oral diabetes medication, my high blood pressure medication and other various and sundry meds I was taking. My wife got off her meds and had marvelous treatment from a cardiologist right in Luperon. Office visits were $21. I had a tooth capped and a bridge made for about $300. It would have cost me over $4,000 in the States. I walked a lot and ate well but ate simple. I still could get a "gringo" meal at one of the fine restaurants serving the boating community in a resort type atmosphere along with a Mai Tai or some other tropical drink.
My wife and I returned... to the US as she has a medical condition that can only be treated by one of eight surgeons in the entire US. There was not a surgeon in the Dominican that did this type of surgery. She will need surgery to take care of a condition with her hands about every two to three years and the economics forced us to relocate and re-retire in Missouri. I currently work a part time job now at 66 years old to supplement my income. We miss the Dominican Republic. It was a very positive experience. I say that with the proviso that being in foreign country and retiring, you need to have a mentor to aid you in dealing with all of the ins and outs of things. I would have never gotten all of my personal belongings out of customs without any pain without the help I got from Gil and his arranging for me to be accompanied by someone that had expertise in customs. Gil's lovely wife helped me deal with a lot of local issues. She also taught me how to properly peel a mango.

DR becomes retiree paradise... With the approval and publication of Law 171-07 on Foreign Retirees, the Dominican Republic has become a paradise for people planning to retire to an idyllic setting. Fast-tracked residency paperwork (45 days), duty-free household goods, reductions on motor vehicle taxes, exemption on transfer taxes for the first purchase of real estate, 50% reduction on taxes on mortgages, 50% reduction on the annual property tax, exemption on taxes on dividends and interest, 50% reduction on capital gains are just some of the attractions. Developers are very happy with the new law. Just ask Jose Luis Asilis, the president of the Metro Group, who pointed out the need to publicize the news overseas. Asilis told a meeting organized by Listin Diario that Europeans can "live like kings on a fraction of what they receive in pensions." The minimum monthly income required is US$1,500 US for retirees with a government or private pension and US$2,000 in verified income from all others. |
